Johnny Appleseed (born Johnathan Chapman; September 26, 1774 – March 18, 1845) was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Ontario, as well as the northern counties of West Virginia.

A deeply religious man, he became a self-appointed missionary for the Church of the New Jerusalem, a Christian Church based on the Biblical interpretations of Emanuel Swedenborg, a Swedish scientist and theologian. Johnny shared his religious tracts and his Bible with the settlers would listened to him.

Although legend paints a picture of Johnny as a dreamy wanderer, planting apple seeds throughout the countryside, research reveals him to be a careful, organized businessman, who over a period of nearly fifty years, bought and sold tracts of land and developed thousands of productive apple trees.

John Chapman lived a remarkable life, and one thing that contributed to his lifestyle was that he was never married. He didn't think marriage was the right option, as he wanted to travel around planting apple trees. Because he didn't marry, he had no children to inherit his land and trees.

To prove the homestead permanent, settlers were required to plant 50 apple trees and 20 peach trees in three years. Chapman took advantage of this deal, traveling through Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Illinois, planting enough seeds to create orchards that he would sell to settlers when they arrived.

John never married and as mentioned above, he owned 1,200 acres of tree nurseries, along with several other plots of land when he dies. His estate and holdings passed on to his sister.

In 1845, around the age of 70, John Chapman died. His grave site was disputed for a number of years, and its exact location is still a subject of some mystery. However, his legacy as a pioneer and fruit grower is still very much alive today – especially in the apple trees that he helped plant in the Midwest.

He was a real person, actually, although some aspects of his life were mythologized over time. John Chapman was born in Massachusetts in 1774. Little is known about his early life except that his mother died when he was young and that his father fought in the American Revolutionary War.

While there were many thousands of such trees during his lifetime, including many in Mansfield, Ashland, Galion, and the surrounding area, many believe that the sole surviving specimen is located in the small Ohio town of Nova. That Rambo Apple tree is one of an orchard planted about 1830.

In the popular legend Johnny Appleseed carried no gun, went barefoot everywhere, was loathe to harm any living creature, was a vegetarian, and is sometimes described as a teetotaler.
